DISPUTAS ADMINISTRATIVAS NA PERIFERIA DO IMPÉRIO PORTUGUÊS: O ESPÍRITO SANTO NAS BUSCAS PELA SERRA DAS ESMERALDAS

Durante o século XVII, ganha força no Espírito Santo as buscas pela mítica Serra das Esmeraldas, que segundo a lenda, se encontrava no interior da Capitania. O interesse em encontra-la e receber as mercês e benefícios pelos serviços prestados ao Rei levam à longas e complicadas disputas que interferem em todas as camadas da administração imperial portuguesa. Produto parcial das pesquisas de mestrado, a análise dessas disputas nos permite enxergar a existência de poderes periféricos que não correspondem aos desejos da Coroa e com força o suficiente para alterar a decisão final.

ADMINISTRATIVE DISPUTES IN THE PERIPHERY OF THE PORTUGUESE EMPIRE: ESPÍRITO SANTO IN SEARCH OF THE SERRA DAS ESMERALDAS.
ABSTRACT: During the 17th century, the search for the mythical Serra das Esmeraldas becomes strong in Espirito Santo. The legend says that it was situated somewhere in the Capitania. The desire to find it and receive the benefits (mercês) for the services to the King leads to long and complicated political fights that interfere in all the layers of the Portuguese imperial administration. Partial product of the Master’s degree researches, the analysis of this political fights allow us to see the existence of peripheral powers that do not correspond to the desires of the Crown and powerful enough to change the final decision.
