O questionamento da manipulação tradicional e estereotipada dos papéis sexuais representados em muitas obras literárias do Período Vitoriano e que parece estar culturalmente associada às diferenças biológicas entre os sexos, traz à tona as contradições e os paradoxos presentes na ideologia do feminino e do masculino vigentes na sociedade inglesa do século XIX. Essas noções preconcebidas dos papéis femininos, além de restringir o pleno acesso social das mulheres à educação e ao trabalho, também exaltavam a imagem mais representativa e simbólica do universo feminino inglês: a figura da mulher angelical, evocada no poema The Angel in the House (1854), de Coverty Patmore (1823-1896). O objetivo deste artigo é fazer uma breve análise da representação e do papel submissos da mulher perante o homem no período vitoriano que são combatidos pela escritora Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), em sua obra Aurora Leigh (1857).

THE INNOVATIVE IMAGE OF VICTORIAN WOMEN IN AURORA LEIGH (1857)
ABSTRACT: The questioning of the traditional and stereotyped manipulation of the sexual roles represented in many literary works of the Victorian Period and which seems to be culturally associated with biological differences between the sexes, brings up the contradictions and paradoxes present in the ideology of the feminine and the masculine prevailing in society 19th century English. These preconceived notions of female roles, in addition to restricting women’s full social access to education and work, also exalted the most representative and symbolic image of the English female universe: the figure of the angelic woman, evoked in the poem The Angel in the House (1854-62), by Coverty Patmore (1823-1896). The purpose of this article is to make a brief analysis of the representation and the submissive role of women before men in the Victorian period that are combated by the writer Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), in her work Aurora Leigh (1857).
